Tutor Bio

A novelist, award-winning short story writer, author of Leaving Certificate textbooks and a teacher of Leaving Certificate English for almost forty years, I have recently returned to Cork with the intention of combining tuition to a select group of ambitious and dedicated students with the completion of a major writing project of my own. For the past twenty years, I was a Senior English teacher [6th year and 5th year] at the renowned Institute of Education, in Leeson Street, Dublin, teaching day school and weekend classes, as well as intensive revision courses at Christmas and Easter. Before that I taught at Ashfield College, Templeogue, Dublin, and at Sandymount High School, Ballsbridge, Dublin. I am the author of several textbooks, published by Fallon and by Gill & Macmillan, and I have extensive TV and radio experience as an analyst of and commentator on Leaving Certificate examinations and broader educational matters. There are two vital elements in my approach to grinds: [1] sharing the skills and knowledge required to achieve high grades in Leaving Certificate English, aided by my superb collection of notes from my twenty years at the Institute of Education, where standards for both teachers and students are remarkably high, and reinforced by setting and correction examination-type tasks; and [2] inspiring students to that enthusiam for reading and written expression that is so welcomed and highly rewarded by Leaving Certificate English examiners.
